Alivia Clark spent years exercising without losing weight, but the retired school principal from Homewood has shed 19 pounds in recent months by taking this guidance from a University of Pittsburgh Prevention Research Center anti-obesity study: Count calories and don’t gorge on food.

She’s among a group of eight overweight individuals ages 60-75 who have been meeting regularly at the Kingsley Association in Larimer since September as part of Pitt’s MOVE UP study. She was one of five to receive certificates last week commending them for meeting a weight loss goal of 7 percent, and doing it a full four months prior to the program’s completion.
